President Yoweri Museveni, who also serves as Uganda’s Commander in Chief, made some big moves on Friday, May 17. He picked Abbas Byakagaba, a former Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) who recently retired, to be the new Inspector General of Police.

In addition, Museveni appointed James Ochaya as the new Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP), taking over from Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Katsigazi.

Byakagaba steps into the shoes of Martin Okoth Ochola, who retired earlier this year.

Their nominations now await approval from the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, with the Appointments Committee set to review them first.

Byakagaba has a rich history within the Uganda Police Force, having served in various roles like Director of Operations and Regional Police Commander. He’s also held positions such as Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) and Director of Counter Terrorism (2020–2024), along with others like Commandant of Senior Staff College Bwebajja (2018–2020) and Director of Human Resource Development (2015–2018).
